3 Common Ways to Wear a Scarf

The Fall Winter season is coming and you may want to start digging out your Scarf from the wardrobe. It seems wise to wear a scarf as it can keep you warm and fashionable.

 

A little history about scarf – The first recorder scarf in human history appeared in 1350 BC, ancient Egypt. Queen Nefertiti was wearing a tightly woven scarf with a conical headdress.

 

Over 3,000 years of evolution, scarves has become a popular fashion item. They are available in countless materials, patterns and colors. They are commonly found in wool, cashmere and linen.

 

Let’s see how you can carry a scarf in 3 different ways:

Parisian Knot

Parisian knot is one of the most common ways to carry it. You can simply fold your scarf into half the width and length. Then form a hole with the folded end and put the loose end through the hole. Then tighten the scarf and it will keep you warm in a nice way.

Drape

The easiest way to wear a scar is drape – simply drape your scarf around your neck without folding or tightening it. More importantly, keep them equal length on both sides! You can wear it with your coat and it will add more color and layers to your outfit. However, drape is more for keeping you fashionable instead of warm.

Once Around

Another common way to wear a scarf is once around. Simply drape the scarf around your neck once without tightening it. You can let either one end longer than the other or keep them even. If you wear a long scarf, you can do twice around – drape the scarf around your neck twice and you will create an inner knot where no one can notice.

You may notice that Japan is one of the world leading denim factory and they have denim dyed in a wide range of stunning Japan blue. Yet, Rome wasn’t built in a day and blue color actually has a very long history in Japan.

 

The History of Japan Blue Color

The story can be dated back to the Edo Period (1603-1868), when the indigo dyeing industry started to flourish in Japan. During this period, there were different social classes in Japan and there are restriction on the clothes and color they can wear. For instance, luxury fabrics like silk are only available to the upper class. On the other hand, normal citizens only use cotton and hemp to make their clothes. And they were permitted to dye them in a few color only – indigo was one of them.

 

Yet, the restriction didn’t limit the creativity of the citizens and they created a wide range of indigo to make their garments more colorful. In the history of Japan blue color, it has about 65 different types of blue. And there are mainly 5 major types as shown below –  AiJiro, Airro, Seiran, Konjyo and Tetsukon. (Left to Right). They are from light to dark tone and there are more variation in between these 5 major types.

In the past, the insulation in the cockpit were very poor. Thus, pilots have to wear bomber jackets with very good insulation and a fur collar to keep them warm. In 1949, there was a technology advancement in aircraft and the cockpit had better insulation. As a result, pilots are no longer needed to put on a thick bomber jacket. Thus, the bomber jacket also evolved from B-15 to the MA-1. The MA-1 is thinner and does not has a fur collar.

Not only the shape but also the color of bomber jacket evolved. The standard color of bomber jacket was midnight blue.  However, more sage, olive and green bomber jackets were produced during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. These colors allow the pilots to adapt to the jungle and surrounding, which give them better protection.

 

And you may notice that many bomber jackets have an orange lining. It is because if accident happens, the pilots can wear the bomber jackets inside out. Thus, he will be more easily spotted by rescuer with the sharp orange color.

How to Maintain Leather Goods

Although leather goods will age naturally, it is still important to maintain them properly. Below, we will show you some little tips on cleaning your leather goods without damaging them.

 

Cleaner

Water is the enemy of leather. Normally, we will not use water to clean leather goods directly as it will stain the leather or damage the color.

 

DO NOT USE Alcohol or bleach to clean as they damage the surface and fade the color.

 

If your leather goods get dirty, use a proper leather cleaner together with cloth, sponge or towel. There are a lot of proper cleaner on the market, for example, the famous shoes cleaner Jason Markk. And always avoid applying these cleaner directly on the leather. Instead, apply them on the clothes or sponge first. Then rub the leather surface gently with it.

Scratch

If you scratch the leather goods, don’t worry. Simply apply some leather cream on to a towel or soft brushes. Then rub the scratched area and the area around it gently. It will smoothen the scratch and balance the color of that area. To play safe, you can always try the cream on some non-obvious area of the leather goods first. It will make sure the cream does no damage on the color of the leather.

Paint

Although faded color shows the beauty and history of your leather, some people just can’t stand it. If so, you may want to hire someone to repaint your leather goods. Check with your brand as some of them will provide such service, for instance, the Parisian brand Berluti.

Keep it Dry

Last but not least, keep your leather goods in somewhere cool and away from the sunshine. As it will make them fade unevenly. Also, keep them dry to avoid mildew, especially in places with high humidity (like Hong Kong!) If you do not have a dehumidifier at home, some drying beads will do the work too.
