Print Tee Myth – Screen Printing

Today, we will talk about the production of print tee – with the technology of screen printing. So first of all, let’s start with what’s screen printing means.

Screen printing

It is actually an old technique that was developed by the Chinese even before the early 1900’s. It is a process of transferring ink onto a substrate with a mesh. A stencil (which is also called the screen) is used to block parts of the design you want to print. By applying one color at a time and with several screens with different stencil to block different parts of the designs, you can print a multi-color graphic on a tee.

It does sound like a process that requires a lot of hard work. Do we have any other faster solution in the 21st Century? Yes, the alternative is digital printing. It processes the graphic designs with a computer and print the graphic directly onto the tee with a digital printer – a complicated machine with many tiny nozzles.

Despite the high tech of digital printing, screen printing is still being widely used instead. It is because you can apply a thicker layer of ink in screen printing. As a result, the graphic has a better touch and look. It also works better on dark tee, specialty products or graphic with a complicated designs. And more importantly, The screen printing process involves man instead of machine – which gives more uniqueness and characters to the print tee.

The End Products

Polar Skate Co. , a famous Swedish street wear brand, also uses screen printing to produce their print tee. All their graphic tees are manufactured in a factory in Portugal.

What is Pima Cotton?

There are different types of cotton for crafting clothes. You may be familiar about zimbabwe cotton and organic cotton, but how about pima cotton?

What is Pima Cotton

It is a higher-end cotton which comes from Peru and is named after Pima Indians, who help to breed the cotton in United States. It is commonly used to craft handkerchiefs and t-shirts. Pima is also called as Extra Long Stable. It is because its fiber measurement is between 1.4 to 2 inches while the conventional cotton fiber only has an average of 1.1 inches long. That’s make pima cotton stronger than other cotton. In fact, they are 40% more durable than normal upland cotton. And their end products tend to have 50% longer lifetime as well.

Moreover, pima is a premium cotton because of its scarcity. Only a few places produce pima. These include Australia, Peru and the southwester region of the United States. They are usually hand harvested to prevent damage. Furthermore, the production of pima does not contains pesticide residues or synthetic fertilizers. Thus, it is the perfect products for people with sensitive skin. Their softness and lightweight also prevents irritating your skin.

Pima Cotton T-shirts

Let’s take a look at these t-shirts from NN07. Not on made with quality pima cotton, but also features NN07’s signature minimal designs.

What is Selvedge Denim?

You may often heard about selvedge denim and notice that they usually appear at premium denim line. But do you know what does selvedge denim mean? Today, we will briefly talk about what it is and how it is different from the others.

Stevenson Overall Co. Messenger Trousers - Indigo 8

Selvedge pants from Stevenson Overall Co.

First of all, let’s begin with the word “selvedge”. It is actually the combination of “self” and “edge”. Selvedge refers to a sewing method. The fabric is woven in a way that the garments’ ‘edge’ can be used. When it comes to jean construction, it means using the outer edge of the denim, which is its “self-edge”.

Selvedge denim

(Photo from Long John)

There are several advantages of using selvedge denim. The most important reason is its quality and durability. Since the edge of the denim fabric is used and sewed, the jean created will be more durable. And they are also more resistant to raveling. Moreover, selvedge denim is often more tighter and denser than non-slevedge.

The other reason is its attractiveness. Selvedge is actually a traditional way to craft jeans in the US. However, when the industry revolution comes, the traditional way was replaced by machines and modern looms. Yet, interestingly, the weaving technique and selvedge loom technology has been shifted to Japan since then. Thus, you will find a variety of selvedge denim from Japan.
