The Denim Capital – Okayama

Okayama is a little town in Japan. Yet, it is famous for denim production and it is being referred as the “Denim Capital” of Japan. Denim products come from Okayama are considered to be more premium than the others because of their quality. Thus, a lot of Japanese denim brands work with the factories in Okayama, for instance, Kuro and Stevenson Overall Co.
The history of denim production in Okayama traces back to the early twentieth century, when it played an important role in Japan’s textile industry. Okayama has more than a hundred years history on work wear production. Their first pair of jeans were made in 1967 during the WWII. It has then become one of the largest hub for work wear and school uniforms in Japan.

After a few decades, it becomes one of the best denim producers. Due to the industrial revolution in the US, they switch to use more advanced machinery in the factories. As a result, traditional textile machine and vintage looms have been shipped to Okayama. Thus, even traditional know-how on crafting denim also shifted from the US to Japan. Ironically, even Levis features a premium collection that is “made in Japan” as they can deliver the vintage touch of a traditional denim.

Rivets on Jeans – From Functional to Decorative

You may spot the little copper rivets on jeans or other denim products. In fact, these metal rivets on jeans were designed and patented by Levi Strauss. As workers wore jeans to work, rivets were being widely applied on jeans’ pocket corner to enhance their durability. They reinforce the denim and prevent them from ripping apart.

However, with the advancement of technology, modern stitching can also provide the same function. Moreover, with the rising trend of minimalism, manufacturers try to eliminate unnecessary details on their designs. As a result, you seldom find rivets on jeans nowadays. Yet, it doesn’t mean that rivets should be gone completely. Putting rivets on jeans is a salute to the tradition and they are the perfect decoration for vintage denim lovers.

Apart from the rivets, Jacrons is also a must on jeans. They are the label at the back of the waist. Their function is to show the brand and size of the jeans – which they still do now. Yet, many of the Jacrons are now made of faux leather instead of real leather.

What is Selvedge Denim?

You may often heard about selvedge denim and notice that they usually appear at premium denim line. But do you know what does selvedge denim mean? Today, we will briefly talk about what it is and how it is different from the others.

Stevenson Overall Co. Messenger Trousers - Indigo 8

Selvedge pants from Stevenson Overall Co.

First of all, let’s begin with the word “selvedge”. It is actually the combination of “self” and “edge”. Selvedge refers to a sewing method. The fabric is woven in a way that the garments’ ‘edge’ can be used. When it comes to jean construction, it means using the outer edge of the denim, which is its “self-edge”.

There are several advantages of using selvedge denim. The most important reason is its quality and durability. Since the edge of the denim fabric is used and sewed, the jean created will be more durable. And they are also more resistant to raveling. Moreover, selvedge denim is often more tighter and denser than non-slevedge.

The other reason is its attractiveness. Selvedge is actually a traditional way to craft jeans in the US. However, when the industry revolution comes, the traditional way was replaced by machines and modern looms. Yet, interestingly, the weaving technique and selvedge loom technology has been shifted to Japan since then. Thus, you will find a variety of selvedge denim from Japan.
