Organic Cotton 101

What is organic cotton? Why is it related to you? In this article, we will talk about some basic knowledge about it.

To make it simple, organic cotton refers to cotton that will bring less harm to the environments. It requires an organic production system. It must retain soil fertility without using toxic fertilizer. Furthermore, it must not contain genetically engineered seed for organic farming. When it comes to harvesting, farmers will use natural defoliation method like freezing temperature or water management instead of using toxic chemicals.

As a result, fabrics made with organic cotton are safe to wear as they do not contain toxic chemicals. Also, it makes them softer in texture. And you are also supporting fair trade by using organic cotton as it is required that organic farmers should be working in a safe and non-abusive environment with reasonable living wages.

In fact, there is a rise in the use of organic cotton. According to the survey conducted by Textile Exchange (2016), there is an average 10% yearly increase in production. Also, more than 40% of the surveyed brands choose to use organic cotton or a mix of organic cotton. They also include some of the big names in the market.

Kuro Denim designer Mr. Yabashi Tadashi was recently interviewed together with Mr. Atsushi Yamamoto, who manages a denim processing factory in Kojima, Japan.

They have been working together on Kuro’s denim collections for a long time. As they believe that although there are lots of fabrics to make denim products, different processing method will give a different result.

That’s why Kuro’s denim are all dyed and processed in Kojima, the denim city. As it is their own know-how and pride to craft a good denim. And Kuro denim jacket is definitely the product to claim this statement.

The denim jacket is hand dyed in the factory in Kojima, which gives it a stunning indigo blue. This raw denim will also fade over time as you wear it.

However, what really makes it special is the fabric Kuro chooses – Zimbabwe cotton. Different cotton has different staple length, and the longer is the length, the softer and harrier the fabrics it will produce. Zimbabwe cotton is one of the cotton that has the longest stable length on our planet. Thus, kuro denim jacket is very soft and smooth. However, Zimbabwe cotton is also extremely rare. As they can only be grown by a few number of farmers in South Africa. And they can only harvest by hand every year. As a result, they are not commonly used by denim makers. But obviously, Kuro is not an ordinary denim maker and they never disappoint you.

The back yoke also has a round cut down to enhance your mobility. The shirt itself is in stunning faded indigo as the chambray fabric was made with indigo-dyed yarn in Japan.

However, they are in different shape that gives a more classy and vintage look. The chest pockets also have two press buttons. It has two layers on the should and the front yoke goes down to the chest like an arrow while the back yoke cuts down in a v shape. It gives you a rigid slim fit outlook. As for material, it is Zimbabwe Cotton, which is extremely soft and smooth to wear with.
